Welcome to the GeoArch blog!

This blogsite (www.archaeometallurgy.co.uk) complements the more formal GeoArch website (www.GeoArch.co.uk) and Facebook page through news and comment on the work of GeoArch and scientific archaeology more broadly.

Besides archaeometallurgy, this site provides updates on the progress of the Cardiff University/GeoArch excavations in Llantwit Major and the community archaeology project at Llandaff Pound.

NEW! The Llantwit Major excavation pages have been restructured. This project homepage will provide background and resources as well as links to the blogs for each individual season.

The three featured archaeometallurgical projects are selected from across the breadth of materials and technologies investigated by GeoArch:

  • an investigation of the early 19th century refinery process at Ynysfach Ironworks, Merthyr Tydfil
  • an analytical investigation of tungsten-rich tin smelting slags from Devon and the light it sheds on the origin of the alternative name for tungsten, wolfram
  • excavation of Iron Age iron smelting furnaces of unusual design near Wokingham
